The Myth of the Solo Founder
We worship at the altar of the founder.
The popular cultural narrative is that the founder is a solo, mythic hero, and many people love it.
We talk about them like they’re these solitary heroes who woke up one day, battled the market single-handedly, and built an empire out of thin air. The story is great, it's just incomplete.
And as a repeat founder and advisor to other founders myself, I know the true story. The founder might be the face of the victory, but they are never, ever operating alone.
Springboard Enterprises's Demo Day and TechUnited’s Mentor Uplift made me think about who's actually standing behind that mythic founder.
There are advisors who take calls at 9 pm to walk a founder through a term sheet they'd never seen before. A clinician who volunteered hours to validate a device before anyone else believed in it. A council member who made one introduction that became the pilot that became the data, the data resulting in clearance. The program staff who built the room that those 11 founders stood in. They booked it, sorted out staff, fought for the budget, and chased the RSVPs.
The ecosystem of supportive architecture is what makes entrepreneurship viable in the first place. Founders need capital and conviction, but also someone who'll return a call at an inconvenient hour, vouch for them to a stranger, and tell them the truth when the plan is wrong.
That's the not-so-glamorous bits many people don’t see. The support system doesn’t pitch or get the applause, yet they still continue showing up for the next cohort, and the one after that, without their name on anything.
So this one's for the advisors, the council members, operators, people who build the rooms and make the introductions and never ask to be named. You're the reason there's a story at all.
